Midsommar

I would like to introduce a movie I saw recently that shocked me. The movie is Midsommar. Midsommer is a 2019 United States-Swedish co-production horror film, but the director of this movie says that this movie is a romance movie.  It is directed and written by Ari Aster.  The principal photography for this movie was done in Budapest, Hungary. The main cast in this movie is Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson  Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe, and Will Poulter. The inhabitants of Holga are mainly played by Swedish actors, some of whom speak Swedish in some scenes. A few of the supporting characters, such as Danny's family, are played by Hungarians. It was the 6th place in the weekend box office ranking and earned $6.56 million in its first weekend of release. The movie was screened in Japan on February 21, 2020 with R15+ designation.  The film's critical approval rating stands at 89%.

The main character is Dani Ardor. She is mentally unstable and has been taking sleeping pills and receiving counseling. She always has emotional instability and calls her boyfriend Christian in tears. Christian was drinking with a friend, and the friend who didn’t think well of Danny's mental instability and dependence on him, told him to break up with her, but Christian couldn't go through with it. A friend of his asked him to come to the Midsummer Festival in the village of Holga in Sweden. He decided to go to the Midsummer festival with Danny and his friends. Danny and the others traveled to Sweden and visited the village of Holga. At first, the group is fascinated by the fantastic scenery of the meadow surrounded by forest and the kind villagers dressed in white, but there are more and more creepy rituals and strange behavior. That was the beginning of the horror. She started having fear and anxiety.

My impression of this movie was creepy. This movie was a very beautiful shot of nature but I thought it was scary, because horror movies usually take place in the shadows and the dark. This movie was an exercise in creepiness by using nature in the midnight sun as the setting. It shows the horror of group psychology. I was scared that the weakened main character was brainwashed, because I have seen it before in the real world. There were a lot of grotesque scenes, so that was shocking for me. However, there were no ghosts in this movie, so if you don’t like ghosts and have a tolerance for grotesqueness, you will enjoy watching this movie, but I don’t recommend watching this movie at night. I didn't understand the meaning of the end of this movie after all. If anyone knows the meaning of the end, please let me know!
